Politicians like to promise us "good jobs at good wages." That's nice. But it's not necessarily a sure fire way to end poverty. You can have a great job, but if you don't have the skills to keep it, it's not going to last. The key to getting out of poverty isn't just the job, it's also having the skills to sustain yourself and your family. If someone's not literate, they're going to have a very hard time staying out of poverty.MagLiteracy.org is a wonderful organization that provides free, new and recycled magazines to hundreds of thousands of at-risk adults and children in the US and around the globe. I find it fascinating that the seeds of the organization were planted during the decade that the consumer magazine industry began to seriously contract and consolidate and that their founding happened during the decade that the consolidation accelerated at "warp speed."If you're reading this newsletter, chances are that you work in or adjacent to the magazine, book or newspaper publishing industry, either in print or digital. My guess would be that you have a lot of books and magazines in some format in your house. Did you know that two thirds of all families in poverty have no books in their homes? If we can promote literacy, if we can promote the habit of reading, we can help people expand their skills to get out of poverty. Even better, we can help them expand their horizons and dream of a life beyond the narrow borders of working to survive.Below is an important message from the MagLiteracy.org founder, John Mennell about their moonshot campaign to promote literacy here and around the globe. Please consider supporting those goals.
